Is there a fine for letting your insurance lapse in Nevada?
Yes. Insurance lapses are illegal and punishable by a $250 fine for a first time offense. Nevada legislators recently increased the penalty for repeat offenses to between $750 and $1000. The DMV estimated that approximately 50,000 people or more were scamming the system before the new fines. Previously, many individuals would prefer to pay the lapse fee than the high cost of insurance. With the fee now triple to quadruple the amount, the DMV anticipates insurance lapse scams drying up.
