Motor insurers back Big Society and volunteering

The motor insurance sector has given the green light to volunteers who want to use their cars to help local communities by promising not to charge extra premiums.

The commitment to supporting the Big Society comes from 85% of the car insurance sector, and includes 54 insurance brands.

The announcement follows discussions with volunteers who found barriers, of both a regulatory and financial nature, to participating in the Big Society.

The commitment applies to private car insurance policies, for drivers using their own vehicles, and using their vehicles for hire or reward is not permitted.

It is hoped that the agreement will help encourage volunteers to assist their local communities, providing transport to hospital for the old and sick, or taking them out on day trips.

Minister for Civil Society Nick Hurd MP expressed his delight at the positive action of the insurance industry to help people support their communities.

The cost of car insurance has increased in recent years, surging particularly for young people.

Earlier this month Co-operative Insurance reported than nearly 90% of those with its Young Driver insurance would receive over £100 in their accounts, as a reward for careful driving.
