How Traffic Violations Really Affect Your Auto Insurance Rate

When applying for car insurance, one of the most important questions you’ll receive from the company is, “Have you had a violation in the past # of years?” For some companies, it may be five years and for others three, but no matter what, if you check “yes” next to that question, you are probably biting your nails in anticipation of what your car insurance quote will be.

Since many people don’t conduct comparison quotes to determine whether a violation has increased their rate or not, it’s hard to say whether it makes a huge difference. But some say, yes, moving violations make a huge difference.

Study Shows Moving Violations Makes Rates Jump

A study conducted by Insurance.com in May 2011 found that after surveying 32,000 auto insurance policies sold through the website in 2010, the auto insurance quotes jumped significantly with each moving violation.

Here is a breakdown of the website’s analysis:

  • 0 violations: Average annual premium $1,119
  • 1 violation: Avg. premium $1,318

Getting your auto insurance policy at the right age matters as the lenders will consider your age before lending you with an auto insurance policy. If you’re just 25 years old or lower than that, chances are high that the auto insurance lender will charge you high premiums as you’re more prone to road accidents at this age. Sports car will certainly be driven at excessively high speed and this will naturally make it more vulnerable on road. As the auto insurance policy holder is more likely to file a claim while driving a sports car, the lender will secure him by keeping high premium rates. If you want to save money, you must get yourself a low-profile car that is less prone to theft and accident.

The drivers with a tarnished driving record are deemed to be risky drivers and this is the reason why they’re charged high premium rates. You must have a clean driving record without many traffic violations, speedy tickets and road accidents to secure low rates on your auto insurance policy in North Carolina. You can also get a defensive driving course from a reputable institution to show that you’re a trained driver and that you’re less open to road accidents.

When buying a new car, avoid budget-busting premium surprises

When you are budgeting for a new car, do you think about how your new wheels will change your auto insurance rate? I have been involved in auto sales, arranging auto loans, and auto insurance for many years. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen someone stretch to make a car payment fit into their budget only to have the cost of car insurance blow that budget to pieces.

It happened to me once with a motorcycle. I called around for quotes, and found what I thought was a great deal. I bought the motorcycle, paid my vehicle insurance, and then got hit with a “we goofed” notice billing me for an additional $2400 per year. I scrambled, found cheaper coverage, and cancelled the policy.

The motorcycle episode taught me three things that have saved my bacon more than once:

  1. When you narrow your choice down to two or three cars, call your agent and find out what effect each car will have on your auto insurance premiums.
