Van Insurance is significantly affected by Occupation

As a van driver, your occupation is one of the most important rating factors when it comes to your insurance policy.

The reason being is that many occupations involving a van carry risks, some occupations may involve more driving thus creating a higher risk of an accident occurring and other occupations may require more care and attention when delivering their loads which would result in a less risky occupation.

If the occupation involves the transit of dangerous or hazardous materials such as chemicals or explosives then many van insurance companies may not even be willing to give you a van insurance quote as they are not interested in the risk factor associated with your line of business. If your occupation falls in to this category then you may be looking for specialist insurance from a firm who is prepared to encounter this type of professional risk.

There could also be a high risk associated with occupations which mean that you spend a lot more time in the vehicle; such as a Police riot van driver or delivery drivers.

RSA warns drivers of twilight zone danger

Global insurer RSA has advised motorists that taking extra care as British Summer Time commences is wise, as figures reveal a spike in collisions during twilight after the clocks change.

RSA UK & Western Europe Chief Executive Adrian Brown said that regular eye tests were as important as an MOT when it comes to driving safely, and advised drivers to have their eyes checked every few years.

Twilight is an especially difficult time for vision, as the eyes must continually adjust to rapidly fading light.

There is only a basic element of eyesight testing during a driving test, and 20% of British motorists have not had an eye examination in the last two years, the period recommended by the NHS for regular eye tests.

Unfortunately, twilight for motorists is not the only potential concern Britons face as the clocks change.

Aviva has recently warned homeowners to ensure their sheds and garages are secure, as break-ins surge by more than a quarter when the clocks change.

Pets may pose driver distraction hazard

Though cell phones and other electronic devices are usually the target for laws intended to combat distracted driving , a new Oregon bill recently introduced in the Senate would ban driving with an animal on one’s lap.

State Senator Ginny Burdick has introduced the law in an effort to make “operating a vehicle when an animal is in the operator’s lap,” a traffic violation that would carry a $90 maximum fine.

Potential hazards posed by animals in vehicles have been in the forefront recently, given the increasing public concerned over distracted driving hazards.

Pets could begin begging for their owners’ attention, become carsick, begin chewing the car’s upholstery or even place their paws on the steering wheel, all potential distractions for the driver, which could result in a serious accident.

“Tens of thousands of car accidents are believed caused every year by unrestrained pets, though no one has solid numbers,” according to the Associated Press.

Drivers should be cautious when driving with animals and may want to keep pets in the backseat, whether or not it is mandated by local law.

ABI: new motor and travel agreement for older customers

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has announced a new agreement to improve access to motor and travel insurance for older customers.

In a speech to the Age UK conference yesterday, ABI director general, Otto Thoresen, announced that ABI members that dont provide insurance because they apply age restrictions will have to signpost customers to an alternative appropriate provider, who will offer a product regardless of age.

Mr Thoresen commented: “With an ageing population, it is crucial that we make it easier for older people to access financial services.

The agreement will come into force in April 2012.

The director general also announced that the ABI will be increasing transparency by publishing aggregated claims data each year, so that consumers can be confident that age is relevant to the assessment of risk, for both motor and travel insurance.

Separately, the ABI says it intends to work with its members to find the best way to communicate with older people, particularly where there are specific communication needs related to hearing or sight.

The Associations research shows that while 41% of drivers in their late 60s would prefer to use a website, this drops to 25% for those aged 75 and over, with the remaining 75% of over 75s preferring to use the phone.
