Frightening places in your home that could scare up some home insurance claims

Gina Roberts-Grey

Ghosts and goblins may not be the only things hiding in the dark spaces of your house. Some parts of your house are insurance claims just waiting to be discovered, home inspectors say. And too often, home owners don’t realize that these scary little spots could prompt claims.

“Preventive maintenance is key to preventing most serious issues in the home,” says Matthew Steger, a licensed home inspector who owns WIN Home Inspection in Elizabethtown, Pa. “Periodically checking some dark spaces can help catch an issue early before further damage can happen.”

Here’s an inside look at how some of the spookiest spots in your house could trigger home insurance claims — or could leave you with thousands of dollars in repairs because your insurance doesn’t cover the damage.

High oil prices may encourage natural gas cars

Now may be a great time to own a vehicle that burns natural gas. The renewable energy source is currently priced at $1.93 a gallon, according to USA Today, almost $2 less than a gallon regular gasoline.

Natural gas-powered models

Despite the low cost of fuel, only a small number of commercially available vehicles can actually run on natural gas. Honda recently announced it was going to start selling its natural gas-powered 2011 Civic in every state this year, after previously only offering the model to government fleets and individual buyers in New York, California, Utah and Oklahoma. To date, the vehicles aren’t huge sellers – the Associated Press reports that Honda only sells about 1,500 natural-gas Civics a year.

Ford also manufacturers a natural-gas burning car, although it has mainly been sold to taxicab companies at this point.

Swerve in car insurance costs

The cost of comprehensive motor insurance cover rose by an average 12.3% in the 12 months to the end of September, according to the latest Confused.com/Towers Watson Car Insurance Price Index.

However, the rate of increase compares with 38% over the whole of 2010, and the average cost of a comprehensive policy now stands at a mere £843, having risen by only £92 since October of 2010.

Even more encouraging for consumers, premiums have actually fallen in the last three months, with a 1.6% decrease marking the first quarterly drop in comprehensive cover for over three years.

As widely acknowledged, escalating levels of bodily injury claims are a major force in car insurance inflation but despite action on referral fees, Towers Watson director, Peter Lee, is uncertain whether the current state of motor insurers profitability justifies dropping prices just yet.

He explains: Although the economic downturn has reduced claims as a result of people driving less, the proportion of accidents that result in bodily injury claims is still growing strongly.

Confused.com head of motor, Gareth Kloet, is more positive, stating: “The good news for consumers is that prices appear to be levelling out and there is real momentum behind making sure that the legal system creates an environment where conscientious drivers, who make up the vast majority, can get a fair deal from insurers.”

Other key findings from the survey include:

Reading About Creative Cheap Engagement Rings

Relationships are somewhat difficult to understand. It is about this time that a couple will get engaged. To symbolize this commitment an engagement ring is given to the woman. It is very similar to cheap engagement rings. The cheap engagement rings that have gemstones mounted on their gold band will not be of a large or extravagant nature. While wearing other types of jewelry with rubies is fine, the thought of wearing ruby necklaces is one that can make a woman very happy. As with the various trends that you can see in jewelry, Egyptian jewelry is also considered as unusual jewelry to wear. This taste for Egyptian jewelry is not confined to be worn by only one gender.

When you have to buy the ring you should see if the gold ring is one that can be worn for a suitable length of time. There are other types of beautifully made cheap engagement rings that you can look at. While it is traditional for the newly engaged woman to show off her engagement ring with a massive stone on it, the cheap engagement rings can look just as sensational.
